Where To Go
Approximately a 10 minute drive up the coast is the beautiful town
of Benalmadena with a superb port and excellent cafes, bars and
restaurants. There are plenty of shops and a Sealife centre for
the kids. The nightlife is robust and plentiful. You can stroll
around the port area and rest at one of many cafes and bars on the
waters edge. Many of them have bread packs which you can purchase
so while you enjoy a drink the kids can feed the fish and boy do
the like being fed!
There is a large fairground called Tivoli World which caters for
all from toddlers to teenagers to the twilight years (if you can
stand the fun). There is a small entrance fee and you can purchase
a wrist band for unlimited rides and hours of fun. There are shows,
cafes, bars, restaurants and beautiful gardens with freely roaming
peacocks. Near the entrance of the fairground is a cable car which
gives spectacular views from the top of the mountain over the whole
of the Costa de Sol. If you travel further up the coast you will
come to Torremolinos which has a beautiful beach and promenade,
again with lots of amenities for the kids and the adults. The busy
city of Malaga if further along the coast with masses of shopping
for all!
Approximately 5 minutes drive to the other side of Torreblanca is
the resort of Fuengirola, again with plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants.
There are numerous fish restaurants dotted up and down the promenade
on the beach. Pedalos aplenty for kids of all ages and a lovely
clean well kept beach for sunbathing and swimming. There is a large
water
park which is great fun for everyone and some pretty daredevil
water chutes where the kids show no fear. (also a second very large
waterpark in nearby Torremolinos). The town of Mijas is situated
in the hills. You can get there by bus from Fuengirola bus station
very cheaply. It is a lovely town overlooking a large area of the
Costa del Sol where you can see for miles. There are plenty of quaint
bars, cafes and restaurants with masses of shops which sell anything
from souvenirs to expensive crystal. If you venture further along
the coast you will come to the elite resorts of Marbella and Puerto
Banus. If you are a boat or car lover you will enjoy looking at
the vast array of superb boats and flash cars at Puerto Banus. This
resort is must for people watching, you can usually spot a well
known face in the crowd. Here again there are lots of bars cafes
and restaurants and designer shops.
If you enjoy the nightlife be prepared for it to get going around
2am with upbeat bars and clubs aplenty. From here you can venture
up the coast to places like San Pedro and up as far as Algeciras
where you can take a boat trip across the Med to Africa, Tangiers.
Morocco and other places of interest. Next to Algeciras is the British
colony of Gibraltar If you like your M&S shopping then you will
feel like your back in Britain. You can go up the rock, see the
sights and pose for photographs with the monkeys. Be warned it isn’t
a duty free Island although you may be tempted by the cheap alcohol
and tobacco. You will need to have your passport when you go as
you are passing from Spain onto British soil. All these resorts
can be reached by either car or bus
If you are feeling energetic and fancy a game of golf there are
numerous golf courses dotted along the coast the nearest being Torrequebrada
only a 5 minute drive away. You can find information on the whereabouts
and fees for these courses on the internet. There is also a local,
free, English paper in Spain called the Sur found in most bars and
shops in which you can also find out these details along with many
other activities including climbing, pony trekking, horse riding
and entertainment going on along the coast. There is horse racing
in Mijas Costa which mainly takes place at night due to the heat
but sometimes during the day. Boardings around the town will show
when it is next on. There is regular live entertainment going on
with a famous face or two appearing in the past such as Elton John
and Rod Stewart.
